Colley Cibber was an English actor, playwright, poet, and theatre manager. He was the most popular playwright of the Restoration period, and his plays were performed for over a century after his death. He was also the first Poet Laureate of England. Cibber was born in London, the son of a leather-seller. He was educated at Merchant Taylors' School and St Paul's School, and then apprenticed to a goldsmith. He began his career as an actor in 1690, and soon became a popular figure on the London stage. He wrote his first play, Love's Last Shift, in 1696, and it was a great success. Cibber went on to write over 30 plays, including The Careless Husband (1704), She Would and She Would Not (1705), and The Non-Juror (1717). He also wrote several volumes of poetry, including An Apology for the Life of Mr. Colley Cibber (1740). Cibber was appointed Poet Laureate in 1730, and held the post until his death in 1757. He was also the manager of the Drury Lane Theatre from 1710 to 1733. Cibber's net worth is estimated to be around $1 million.

Colley Cibber (1671-1757) was an actor, theatrical impresario, playwright and poet now remembered only for his bowdlerization of William Shakespeare's Richard III (1955) (Laurence Olivier used Cibber's interpolations in his 1955 film of the play) and for being the model for the chief protagonist of his nemesis Alexander Pope's poem "The Dunciad". He was a very successful actor-manager in his time, famed for playing fops.
