He is best known for his novel, The Biggest Game in Town, which was adapted into a film in 1982. Wilcox attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1947. He then attended the University of Iowa, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in English in 1949. Wilcox began his writing career in the 1950s, publishing short stories in various magazines. His first novel, The Biggest Game in Town, was published in 1961. He went on to write several more novels, including The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing (1973), The Last of the Duanes (1975), and The Last of the Duanes (1977). Wilcox has also written several non-fiction books, including The Art of the Novel (1966), The Art of the Short Story (1968), and The Art of the Screenplay (1970). Wilcox's most famous series-detective was the television character Sam McCloud, a New Mexico deputy solving New York crime. The "urban cowboy" was played by Dennis Weaver in the 1970–1977 TV series McCloud. Wilcox wrote two novelizations based on scripts from the series: McCloud (1972) and The New Mexican Connection (1974).

Born in Detroit, Michigan, September 21, 1924, his first book was The Black Door (1967), featuring a sleuth possessing extrasensory perception. His major series of novels was about Lieutenant Frank Hastings of the San Francisco Police Department. Titles in the Hastings series included Hire a Hangman, Dead Aim, Hiding Place, Long Way Down and Stalking Horse. Two of his last books, Full Circle and Find Her a Grave, featured a new hero-sleuth, Alan Bernhardt, an eccentric theater director. Wilcox also published under the pseudonym "Carter Wick".
