Maria Corazon Sumulong Cojuangco, more commonly known as Cory Aquino, was born on January 25, 1933 in Tarlac, Luzon, Philippines. She was the 11th of 12 children born to Jose Cojuangco and Demetria Sumulong. She was educated at St. Scholastica's College in Manila and later at Mount St. Vincent College in New York. Aquino was a political activist and leader who served as the 11th President of the Philippines from 1986 to 1992. She was the first female president in the country's history and the first female president in Asia. She was also the first president to be elected through a snap election. Aquino was a key figure in the People Power Revolution, which overthrew the authoritarian rule of Ferdinand Marcos in 1986. She was also a key figure in the restoration of democracy in the Philippines. Aquino was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Peace and International Understanding in 1986 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009. She died on August 1, 2009 at the age of 76.
