Corneliu Ionescu is a Romanian politician and former Prime Minister of Romania. He was born in Pitești, Romania, on 20 February 1956. He graduated from the University of Bucharest in 1979 with a degree in economics. Ionescu began his political career in 1990, when he was elected to the Romanian Parliament. He served as Minister of Finance from 1992 to 1996, and as Prime Minister from 1996 to 1998. He was also a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2009. Ionescu is currently the president of the National Liberal Party, a center-right political party in Romania. He is also a member of the European People's Party.
