Cosmo Gordon Lang was a Scottish Anglican prelate who served as Archbishop of York (1908–1928) and Archbishop of Canterbury (1928–1942). He was one of the most influential figures in the Church of England in the first half of the 20th century. Lang was born in Fyvie Manse, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, the son of a Church of Scotland minister. He was educated at the University of Aberdeen and the University of Oxford, where he was ordained in 1891. He was appointed Bishop of Stepney in 1901, Bishop of Durham in 1908, and Archbishop of York in 1908. In 1928, he was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury, a position he held until his retirement in 1942. During his tenure as Archbishop of Canterbury, Lang was a strong advocate for social reform and was a vocal opponent of fascism. He was also a strong supporter of the Church of England's role in the British Empire and was a key figure in the passage of the Church of England Assembly (Powers) Act 1919. Lang was also a prolific author, writing several books on theology and social issues. He died in 1945 at the age of 80.
