Cristina Saralegui is a Cuban-American television host, actress, producer, and magazine editor. She is best known for hosting the Spanish-language talk show El Show de Cristina on Univision from 1989 to 2010. She is also the founder and editor-in-chief of the magazine Cristina. Saralegui was born in Havana, Cuba, on January 29, 1948. She moved to Miami, Florida, with her family in 1960, after Fidel Castro's revolution. She attended the University of Miami, where she studied journalism and communications. Saralegui began her career in television in the late 1970s, hosting a variety show on Miami's WLTV-Channel 23. She then moved to Univision, where she hosted the variety show Sábado Gigante from 1986 to 1989. In 1989, she began hosting El Show de Cristina, which ran until 2010. In addition to her television work, Saralegui is the founder and editor-in-chief of the magazine Cristina, which she launched in 1994. She has also written several books, including a memoir, Se Llamaba Cristina (Her Name Was Cristina), which was published in 1998. Saralegui has been honored with numerous awards, including the Hispanic Heritage Award, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists' Lifetime Achievement Award, and the National Council of La Raza's ALMA Award. In 2012, she was inducted into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame.

Received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 7060 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California on November 4, 1999.

1992

During the summer of 1992, her TV show aired for a limited 13 week run. The show, distributed nationally by Columbia Pictures Television, generated very respectable ratings in addition to receiving favorable reaction from the press. Cristina was president of CSE Productions, had her own line of fashionable eyewear and her own magazine, and is an active celebrity in AIDS research and education.

1989

With the success of her Spanish-language television show, Pa'lante con Cristina (1989), she decided to test the waters of the English-speaking market by hosting and producing (in association with CBS Television Group) The Cristina Show (1997) in English.

1979

In 1979, while still working for three of the most successful magazines published in Latin America, Cristina was named Editor-in-Chief of the internationally distributed Cosmopolitan en Español, the Spanish-language version of the Hearst magazine Cosmopolitan, which was circulated in all Latin American countries in addition to the United States. Cristina held this position for ten years until she resigned to become Executive Producer and host of "El Show de Cristina".

1960

In 1960, at the age of 11, she left Castro's Cuba to start anew in Miami's Cuban exile community. She attended the University of Miami, majoring in mass communications and creative writing, while beginning an internship with Vanidades, the #1 women's magazine in Latin America. As she had received all of her formal training in English, she then had to teach herself how to write in Spanish, which, according to her, "proved to be a great challenge".
