Cynthia Kadohata is an American author of children's and young adult literature. She is best known for her Newbery Medal-winning novel Kira-Kira. She has also written several other novels, including Weedflower, The Thing About Luck, and Outside Beauty. Kadohata was born in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in Georgia and California. She attended the University of California, Irvine, where she earned a bachelor's degree in English. She then went on to earn a master's degree in creative writing from the University of Southern California. Kadohata has been writing since she was a child, and her first novel, Kira-Kira, was published in 2004. The novel won the Newbery Medal in 2005. Her other novels include Weedflower, The Thing About Luck, Outside Beauty, and The Floating World. Kadohata has also written several picture books, including A Million Shades of Gray, The Floating World, and The Thing About Luck. She has also written a non-fiction book, The Best Bad Luck I Ever Had. Kadohata currently lives in Los Angeles, California, with her husband and two children.
