Dan Olsen is an American computer scientist and professor at Stanford University. He is best known for his work in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics. He is the author of the book "Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach" and the co-founder of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. Olsen was born on June 22, 1953 in American. He received his B.S. in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1975 and his Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University in 1980. Olsen has been a professor at Stanford since 1980 and is currently the director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. He has also served as a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Edinburgh, and the University of Tokyo. Olsen has received numerous awards for his work, including the Association for Computing Machinery's A.M. Turing Award in 2006, the National Academy of Engineering's Draper Prize in 2007, and the IEEE Robotics and Automation Award in 2008. Olsen is married and has two children. He enjoys playing tennis and skiing in his spare time.

Olsen was elected as fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) in 2006 for his work on user interface technology. He was the inaugural editor of the society's journal, ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction (TOCHI). He is a CHI Academy member and gained the CHI Lifetime Research Award in 2012.

1981

In 1981, Olsen became an assistant professor at Arizona State University. In 1984, he moved to Brigham Young University as an assistant professor, rising to associate professor (1986) and professor (1990). He served as Department Chair of Computer Science in 1992–96, and was the director of the Interactive Computing Everywhere) (ICE) Laboratory. During his career at Brigham Young, he also served as a professor and the inaugural director of the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University (1996–98). He retired in 2015.
