Daphne Sheldrick is a Kenyan conservationist and author who has dedicated her life to the protection and conservation of wildlife, particularly elephants. She is the founder of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which works to protect and rehabilitate orphaned elephants and other wildlife in Kenya. Sheldrick was born in Nairobi, Kenya, and grew up in the Tsavo National Park, where her father was the first warden. She attended school in Nairobi and later studied at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. Sheldrick has been involved in conservation since the 1950s, when she worked with her husband, David Sheldrick, to protect the Tsavo National Park. She has since worked with the Kenya Wildlife Service and the African Wildlife Foundation, and has written several books about her work. Sheldrick has received numerous awards for her work, including the Order of the Golden Ark, the J. Paul Getty Wildlife Conservation Prize, and the Order of the British Empire. She was also named a UN Messenger of Peace in 2006.
