Dave Guard was an American folk singer and songwriter, best known as a founding member of the Kingston Trio. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and grew up in Palo Alto, California. He attended Stanford University, where he met fellow Kingston Trio members Nick Reynolds and Bob Shane. Guard was the primary songwriter for the Kingston Trio, writing or co-writing many of their hits, including "Tom Dooley," "M.T.A.," and "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" He left the group in 1961, and went on to form the Whiskeyhill Singers and the Dave Guard and the Calypsonians. Guard also wrote and produced music for television and film, and acted in a few films. He died in 1991 at the age of 56.
