Dave Preston is an American musician, songwriter, and producer. He is best known for his work with the band The Cars, which he co-founded in 1976. He has also released several solo albums and collaborated with other artists. Preston was born in Dayton, Ohio, and grew up in the nearby town of Kettering. He began playing guitar at the age of 12, and soon after joined his first band, The Grasshoppers. He attended the University of Dayton, where he studied music theory and composition. In 1976, Preston co-founded The Cars with Ric Ocasek, Benjamin Orr, Elliot Easton, and Greg Hawkes. The band released their self-titled debut album in 1978, which was a commercial success and spawned several hit singles. The Cars went on to release six more albums, with Preston contributing to the songwriting and production. In the late 1980s, Preston began to focus on his solo career, releasing his debut album, Dave Preston, in 1989. He has since released four more solo albums, as well as several collaborations with other artists. Preston is currently 69 years old. He has an estimated net worth of $10 million.
