He studied law at the University of Paris and was a member of the French National Assembly from 1997 to 2017. Assouline was a member of the Socialist Party and was the Minister of State for the Elderly and Dependent Persons from 2002 to 2004. He was also the Minister of State for the Disabled from 2004 to 2007. Assouline is married to the French journalist and author, Laurence de Cock. They have two children. Assouline is a strong advocate for the rights of the elderly and disabled. He has been involved in numerous initiatives to improve the quality of life for these groups. He is also a strong supporter of the European Union and has been involved in numerous initiatives to promote European integration.
