David Atherton is a British conductor and composer. He is best known for his work in the field of contemporary music, and has conducted many of the world's leading orchestras. He has also composed several works for the stage and screen. Atherton was born in Blackpool, England, and studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He began his career as a conductor in the early 1970s, and has since conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has also conducted the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. Atherton has composed several works for the stage and screen, including the score for the film The Draughtsman's Contract (1982). He has also written several works for the concert hall, including the opera The Tempest (1985) and the cantata The Dream of Gerontius (1989). Atherton has received numerous awards and honors, including the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1989, and the Royal Philharmonic Society's Gold Medal in 2002. He is currently the Music Director of the London Sinfonietta.
