David Buckel was an American lawyer and LGBT rights activist. He was a senior counsel at Lambda Legal, a national organization that works to advance the civil rights of LGBT people and people with HIV/AIDS. He was also a prominent environmental activist, and was the lead attorney in a lawsuit against the City of New York for its failure to reduce air pollution. Buckel was born on June 13, 1957 in Batavia, New York. He graduated from Cornell University in 1979 and received his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School in 1986. Buckel was a prominent LGBT rights activist, and was the lead attorney in a lawsuit against the Boy Scouts of America for its policy of excluding gay scouts and scout leaders. He also worked on a number of other cases involving LGBT rights, including a case involving a transgender student in Virginia who was denied access to the school's restroom. Buckel was also a prominent environmental activist, and was the lead attorney in a lawsuit against the City of New York for its failure to reduce air pollution. He was also involved in a number of other environmental cases, including a case involving the destruction of a wetland in New Jersey. Buckel died on April 14, 2018, after setting himself on fire in Prospect Park in Brooklyn, New York. In a suicide note, he said that he had taken his own life to bring attention to the need for environmental protection.
