David de Wied was born on 12 January, 1925 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He was a Dutch politician and diplomat who served as the Prime Minister of the Netherlands from 1973 to 1977. He was a member of the Labour Party and was the first Prime Minister to come from the party. De Wied studied law at the University of Amsterdam and was a professor of international law at the University of Leiden from 1956 to 1973. He was a member of the Dutch Parliament from 1956 to 1973 and was Minister of Education, Culture and Science from 1967 to 1973. De Wied was Prime Minister from 1973 to 1977 and was responsible for the Dutch economic recovery after the 1973 oil crisis. He was also responsible for the Dutch entry into the European Economic Community in 1973. De Wied retired from politics in 1977 and was appointed as the Dutch Ambassador to the United States from 1977 to 1981. He was also a member of the European Commission from 1981 to 1985. De Wied died on 18 April, 2004 at the age of 79.
