He has been nominated for four Academy Awards, winning one for Best Director for The Fighter. Russell was born in Birmingham, England, and grew up in a working-class family. He attended the University of East Anglia, where he studied English and Drama. After graduating, he moved to London and began working in television and film. Russell's first feature film was the comedy-drama Spanking the Monkey (1994). He followed this up with the critically acclaimed Flirting with Disaster (1996). He then directed Three Kings (1999), which was a critical and commercial success. Russell joined the European Senior Tour on turning fifty and finished as runner-up in each of his first two senior tournaments. In 2005, in his first full season on the European Senior Tour, he had three more runner-up finishes and ended the season 8th place on the Order of Merit.
