Schow attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned a degree in English literature. He began writing short stories in the early 1980s, and his first collection, The Shaft, was published in 1985. He has since published several more collections of short stories, as well as several novels. Schow has also written for television and film, including the screenplay for The Crow, which was released in 1994.
