He has also produced television series such as Pee-wee's Playhouse (1986–1990) and Family Dog (1993). Kirschner was born on May 29, 1955 in Los Angeles, California. He attended the University of Southern California, where he earned a degree in film production. Kirschner began his career in the entertainment industry in the late 1970s, working as a production assistant on the television series The Love Boat. He then went on to produce the television series Pee-wee's Playhouse (1986–1990) and Family Dog (1993). Kirschner's first feature film as a producer was An American Tail (1986), which was a box office success and spawned several sequels.
