David Tanabe is an American former professional ice hockey defenseman who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Carolina Hurricanes, Boston Bruins, Phoenix Coyotes, and Washington Capitals. He was drafted 16th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. Tanabe played four seasons of college hockey at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he was named to the All-WCHA Second Team in 2000–01. He made his NHL debut with the Hurricanes in 2001–02, and was traded to the Bruins in 2003. He was traded to the Coyotes in 2006, and then to the Capitals in 2007. He retired from professional hockey in 2009. Tanabe is currently the head coach of the White Bear Lake Area High School boys' hockey team. He is also the founder of the David Tanabe Hockey School, which provides hockey instruction to players of all ages. As of 2021, David Tanabe's net worth is estimated to be $2 million.
