David Vogan is an American mathematician who was born on 8 September, 1954 in Mercer, Pennsylvania, United States. He is currently 70 years old. Vogan received his B.A. from Harvard University in 1976 and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1981. He is currently the William Caspar Graustein Professor of Mathematics at MIT. Vogan is known for his work in representation theory, algebraic groups, and Lie theory. He has written several books on the subject, including Representations of Real Reductive Lie Groups (1989), Representations of Lie Groups (2004), and Representations of Reductive Groups (2007). Vogan has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the American Mathematical Society's Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement in Mathematics (2006), the American Mathematical Society's Levi L. Conant Prize (2007), and the American Mathematical Society's Frank Nelson Cole Prize in Algebra (2009). Vogan is married to mathematician Lisa Carbone and has two children. He is an avid runner and has completed several marathons.

Vogan was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1996. He served as Head of the Department of Mathematics at MIT from 1999 to 2004. In 2012 he became Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. He was president of the AMS in 2013–2014. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2013. He is currently the Norbert Wiener Chair of Mathematics at MIT.

He received his Ph.D. from M.I.T. in 1976, under the supervision of Bertram Kostant. In his thesis, he introduced the notion of lowest K type in the course of obtaining an algebraic classification of irreducible Harish Chandra modules. He is currently one of the participants in the Atlas of Lie Groups and Representations.
