Del Shankel is a former university president and administrator who served as the president of Kansas State University from 1986 to 1993. He was born on August 4, 1927 in Plainview, Nebraska. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1949. He then went on to earn a master's degree in business administration from the University of Michigan in 1951. Shankel began his career in higher education as an assistant professor of business administration at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1951. He then served as the dean of the College of Business Administration at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln from 1965 to 1971. He was then appointed as the president of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln from 1971 to 1976. In 1976, Shankel was appointed as the president of Kansas State University, where he served until 1993. During his tenure, he was credited with increasing the university's endowment, improving the quality of the faculty, and increasing the number of students enrolled. Shankel has received numerous awards and honors for his work in higher education, including the Distinguished Service Award from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities in 1993.
