Demetrio B. Lakas was the President of Panama from 1978 to 1982. He was born to a wealthy family and was educated at the University of Panama. He served in the Panamanian National Guard and was promoted to the rank of colonel. He was appointed Minister of Government and Justice in 1968 and was later appointed Minister of Defense. In 1978, Lakas was elected President of Panama. During his presidency, he implemented a number of economic reforms, including the privatization of state-owned companies and the liberalization of foreign investment. He also sought to improve relations with the United States and to strengthen Panama's ties with other Latin American countries. Lakas was forced to resign in 1982 due to allegations of corruption and human rights abuses. He was succeeded by Nicolas Ardito Barletta.
