Dhanapala Weerasekera was a Sri Lankan politician and diplomat who served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1977 to 1978. He was a member of the United National Party and was a Member of Parliament for Ratnapura from 1965 to 1977. Weerasekera was born on 26 May 1924 in Ratnapura, Sri Lanka. He was educated at St. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia and the University of Ceylon, Colombo. He was a lawyer by profession and was called to the Bar in 1950. Weerasekera was a Member of Parliament for Ratnapura from 1965 to 1977. He was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1977 and served until 1978. He was also a member of the United Nations General Assembly from 1977 to 1978. Weerasekera was a member of the United National Party and was a close associate of Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike. He was a member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party from 1978 to 1983. Weerasekera died on 28 April 2011 at the age of 87. He was survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.
