Dianne Feinstein is an American politician who has served as a United States Senator from California since 1992. She is the oldest sitting senator and the first woman to have chaired the Senate Rules Committee. Feinstein was mayor of San Francisco from 1978 to 1988, and was the first woman to hold that office. Feinstein was born in San Francisco on June 22, 1933. She attended Stanford University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in history in 1955. She then attended the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where she earned her law degree in 1959. Feinstein began her political career in 1969, when she was appointed to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. She was elected mayor of San Francisco in 1978, and served until 1988. In 1992, she was elected to the United States Senate, becoming the first woman to represent California in the Senate. Feinstein has been a vocal advocate for gun control, environmental protection, and immigration reform. She has also been a strong supporter of the Affordable Care Act. In 2018, she was the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and in 2019 she became the chair of the Senate Rules Committee. Feinstein is married to Richard Blum, an investment banker. They have one daughter, Katherine, who is a lawyer.
