Doane Robinson was an American historian, author, and politician. He is best known for his role in the creation of Mount Rushmore. He was born in Sparta, Wisconsin, and attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He served in the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1883 to 1885 and was the state's secretary of state from 1885 to 1889. Robinson was an advocate for the preservation of the Black Hills of South Dakota, and he proposed the idea of carving the faces of four American presidents into the granite of the mountain. He worked with sculptor Gutzon Borglum to make the project a reality. The project was completed in 1941, and it is now one of the most iconic landmarks in the United States. Robinson was also an author, writing several books about the history of the Black Hills and the history of South Dakota. He died in 1945 at the age of 88.
