Dominique Aury was a French writer and literary editor who is best known for her novel Story of O, which she wrote under the pseudonym Pauline Réage. She was born on 23 September 1907 in Rochefort, Charente-Maritime, France. She was the daughter of a naval officer and a schoolteacher. Aury studied at the Sorbonne and worked as a librarian at the Bibliothèque Nationale. She was also a literary editor at the publishing house Gallimard, where she worked for over 40 years. In 1954, Aury wrote the novel Story of O under the pseudonym Pauline Réage. The novel is a story of female submission and explores themes of sadomasochism and bondage. It was an immediate success and has been translated into numerous languages. Aury was awarded the Grand Prix de littérature de l'Académie française in 1997 for her body of work. She died on 30 April 1998 in Paris, France.

She wrote the novel "Story of O", later adapted as The Story of O (1975) for Jean Paulhan, a member of the Academie Francaise, thirty years her senior whom, she feared, was losing interest in her after many years of their love affair. Paulhan loved the novel, did not lose interest in her, wrote a preface for the book, and got it published simultaneously in French and English under a pen name. The book's authorship remained a secret. Aury meanwhile continued her productive, purposeful, intellectual life, despite the firestorm of controversy her novel provoked. A sequel did not fare as well as the original novel.
