Don D. Robey was an American music executive and entrepreneur who founded the influential record labels Peacock Records and Duke Records. He was born in Houston, Texas, on November 1, 1903. He began his career in the music industry in the 1930s, when he opened a record store in Houston. He soon began to produce and promote local blues and gospel acts, and in 1949 he founded Peacock Records, which became one of the most successful independent labels of the 1950s. In 1955, he founded Duke Records, which was also successful. Robey was known for his business acumen and his ability to spot talent. He was responsible for the success of many blues and gospel acts, including Big Mama Thornton, Little Richard, and Bobby "Blue" Bland. He died in 1975.
