Don Kirshner was an American music publisher, music producer, songwriter, and television producer. He was best known for managing the careers of Bobby Darin, Neil Diamond, and the Monkees, and for hosting the television series Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. Kirshner was born in the Bronx, New York City, and grew up in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan. He attended George Washington High School and graduated from City College of New York in 1954. Kirshner began his career in the music industry as a songwriter, writing for artists such as Bobby Darin and Connie Francis. He then moved into music publishing, founding Aldon Music in 1958 with Al Nevins. Aldon Music was responsible for publishing many of the songs of the Brill Building era, including hits by Neil Diamond, Carole King, and the Monkees. Kirshner also produced and managed the careers of many artists, including Bobby Darin, Neil Diamond, and the Monkees. He also produced the television series Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, which featured performances by many of the top rock acts of the 1970s. Kirshner died on January 17, 2011, at the age of 76. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
