Don Marino Barreto Jr. is a Cuban composer, arranger, and conductor. He is best known for his work in the Cuban music scene, particularly in the genres of salsa, mambo, and cha-cha-cha. He has composed and arranged music for many of the most famous Cuban singers, including Celia Cruz, Omara Portuondo, and Pupy y Los Que Son Son. He has also worked with international artists such as Gloria Estefan, Tito Puente, and Celia Cruz. Barreto was born in Matanzas, Cuba, and began his musical career at the age of 12, playing the piano and singing in a local band. He went on to study music at the National Conservatory of Music in Havana, and later at the University of Havana. In the 1950s, Barreto began to work as an arranger and composer for the Cuban music scene. He wrote and arranged music for many of the most famous Cuban singers, including Celia Cruz, Omara Portuondo, and Pupy y Los Que Son Son. He also worked with international artists such as Gloria Estefan, Tito Puente, and Celia Cruz. Barreto has won numerous awards for his work, including the National Music Award in Cuba, the Latin Grammy Award, and the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame Award. He has also been inducted into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame. Barreto is currently living in Miami, Florida, and continues to compose and arrange music for Cuban and international artists. He is also a professor at the University of Miami, where he teaches courses in Cuban music.
