Donald Appleyard was an English-born urban designer, planner, and author. He was born on 26 July 1928 in London, England. He was educated at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London and at the University of California, Berkeley. Appleyard was a professor of city and regional planning at the University of California, Berkeley from 1965 to 1988. He was a pioneer in the field of urban design, and his work focused on the relationship between the physical environment and the social life of cities. He wrote several books, including Livable Streets (1981), which argued that the design of streets and neighborhoods can have a profound effect on the quality of life in cities. Appleyard was a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects. He was awarded the American Institute of Architects' Topaz Medallion for Excellence in Architectural Education in 1988. He died in 1992 at the age of 64.
