Donald Barthelme was an American short story writer and novelist known for his postmodern works of fiction. He was born on April 7, 1931 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended the University of Houston, where he earned a B.A. in journalism in 1953. After college, he worked as a reporter for the Houston Post and then as an editor for the Houston-based magazine Forum. Barthelme began writing fiction in the late 1950s and published his first collection of short stories, Come Back, Dr. Caligari, in 1964. His other works include the novels Snow White (1967), The Dead Father (1975), and The King (1990). He also wrote several collections of short stories, including Unspeakable Practices, Unnatural Acts (1968), City Life (1970), and Great Days (1979). Barthelme was awarded the National Book Award for Fiction in 1970 for his novel Snow White. He was also a Guggenheim Fellow and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
