She is best known for her books about Chinese culture and history, including The Forbidden Temptation of Baseball, The White Swan Express, and The Secret Voice of Gina Zhang. She is also the founder of the nonprofit organization, The China Connection, which works to promote cross-cultural understanding between the United States and China. Born in 1954 in Youngstown, Ohio, Yang graduated from Harvard University in 1976 with a degree in East Asian Studies. She then went on to earn a master's degree in Chinese history from Stanford University in 1979. Yang has written several books about Chinese culture and history, including The Forbidden Temptation of Baseball, The White Swan Express, and The Secret Voice of Gina Zhang. She has also written several books for young readers, including The Great Wall of Lucy Wu, The Year of the Dog, and The Way Home Looks Now. She is also a board member of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations. Yang has been honored with numerous awards, including the National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship, the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and the National Endowment for the Arts/National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship. She has also been awarded the Chinese American Citizens Alliance National Education Award and the Chinese American Historical Society of Southern California's Lifetime Achievement Award.
