Doris Betts is an American novelist, short story writer, and professor emerita of creative writing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is best known for her short stories and novels about the South, which often focus on the struggles of women. Betts was born in Statesville, North Carolina, and grew up in a family of storytellers. She attended Duke University, where she earned a B.A. in English in 1953. She then earned an M.A. in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1955. Betts began her writing career in the 1950s, publishing short stories in magazines such as The Atlantic Monthly and Harper's. Her first novel, The Gentle Insurrection, was published in 1965. She has since published several novels and collections of short stories, including Beasts of the Southern Wild (1972), The Ugliest Pilgrim (1976), and Souls Raised from the Dead (1994). Betts has won numerous awards for her writing, including the O. Henry Award, the Lillian Smith Award, and the North Carolina Award for Literature. She was inducted into the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame in 2009. Betts has also taught creative writing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since 1965.
