E.C. Bentley was an English writer and humorist best known for his detective novel Trent's Last Case (1913). He was born on 10 July 1875 in Shepherd's Bush, London, England, UK. He was educated at St Paul's School and University College London. Bentley began his career as a journalist, writing for the Daily Mail and the Westminster Gazette. He also wrote for Punch magazine, where he created the comic character of "Clerihew", a four-line biographical poem. He wrote several books of humorous verse, including Biography for Beginners (1905) and More Biography (1910). In 1913, Bentley published his most famous work, Trent's Last Case, a detective novel featuring the character Philip Trent. The novel was a success and was adapted into a play and several films. Bentley also wrote several other novels, including The Woman in Black (1915) and The Grell Mystery (1917). He also wrote a number of non-fiction works, including The Life and Times of Horatio Bottomley (1922) and The Life and Times of Sir Henry Irving (1925). Bentley died on 30 March 1956 in London, England, UK. He was 80 years old.
