Ed Schreyer is a Canadian politician, diplomat, and Governor General of Canada from 1979 to 1984. He was born in Beausejour, Manitoba, and attended the University of Manitoba, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1957. He then attended the University of Oxford, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1959. Schreyer began his political career in 1962, when he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba. He served as the leader of the New Democratic Party of Manitoba from 1969 to 1979, and was the 19th Premier of Manitoba from 1969 to 1977. In 1979, Schreyer was appointed Governor General of Canada, a position he held until 1984. During his tenure, he was known for his commitment to public service and his dedication to the Canadian Armed Forces. Schreyer has also served as Canada's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, and as Canada's Ambassador to the United Nations. He is a Companion of the Order of Canada, and has received numerous honorary degrees from universities across Canada.
