He has also written several novels, including The Last of the Mohicans (1974) and The House of the Seven Gables (1977). Bogardus has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Poetry (1966), the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Fiction (1974), and the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Poetry (1977).
