Edmond About was a French writer and journalist. He was born on 14 February 1828 in Dieuze, Moselle, France. He was the son of a lawyer and was educated at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris. He began his career as a journalist in 1848, writing for the newspaper La Presse. He later wrote for the newspaper Le Constitutionnel and the magazine Revue des Deux Mondes. About wrote several novels, including Le Roi des Montagnes (1854), Le Dernier des Mohicans (1857), and L'Homme qui rit (1869). He also wrote several plays, including Les Miserables (1862) and Les Trois Mousquetaires (1864). About was a staunch defender of the Second Empire and was a member of the Legion of Honor. He died on 8 May 1885 in Paris.
