Edsel Ford was the only son of Henry Ford, the founder of the Ford Motor Company. He was born into a wealthy family and was educated at the Detroit University School and the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut. At the age of 21, Edsel was appointed president of the Ford Motor Company, a position he held until his death in 1943. During his tenure, he was responsible for the introduction of the Model A, the first mass-produced car in the United States. He also oversaw the development of the Lincoln Motor Company, which was later acquired by Ford. Edsel Ford was an avid collector of art and antiques, and he was also a philanthropist. He was a major donor to the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Edsel Ford died in 1943 at the age of 49.
