He began his career in the youth divisions of Club Nacional de Football in 1977. He made his professional debut in 1979 and went on to play for several clubs in Uruguay, including Peñarol, Danubio, and Racing Club de Montevideo. Acevedo was part of the Uruguay national team that won the Copa América in 1983. He also represented his country at the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. In his club career, Acevedo won several titles, including the Uruguayan Primera División with Peñarol in 1981 and the Uruguayan Segunda División with Racing Club de Montevideo in 1989.
