In 1998, he was awarded the Guggenheim fellowship. In 2013 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the American Physical Society.

Fradkin has worked in many areas in theoretical condensed matter physics and is notably broad and versatile in his research topics. Among his most researched areas in condensed matter include the fractional quantum Hall systems and high-temperature superconductivity. He is considered one of the earliest proponents of, and one of the leading figures in, using quantum field theoretical concepts and methods in condensed matter physics, and is well known for popularizing such approaches through his early book Field Theories of Condensed Matter Physics (1st ed. Addison Wesley) in 1991.

Fradkin earned a master's degree from the University of Buenos Aires. He completed his doctorate from Stanford University in 1979, under the supervision of Leonard Susskind, and came to Illinois faculty as a postdoctoral researcher with Gordon Baym and Michael Wortis, later staying on as an assistant professor.

He is a Donald Biggar Willett Professor of Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, where he is the director of the Institute for Condensed Matter Theory, and is the author of the book Field Theories of Condensed Matter Physics (2nd ed., Cambridge University Press, 2013).
