Edwin K. Barker is an American educator and professor emeritus at the University of Iowa. He was born on August 8, 1928 in Indianola, Iowa. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa in 1950 and his master's degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1952. He then went on to receive his doctorate from the University of Iowa in 1956. Barker has served as a professor at the University of Iowa since 1956, teaching courses in educational psychology, educational research, and educational measurement. He has also served as the director of the University of Iowa's Center for Research in Educational Measurement and Evaluation. Barker has authored or co-authored numerous books and articles on educational measurement and evaluation, including Educational Measurement and Evaluation (1966), Educational Measurement and Evaluation: An Introduction (1970), and Educational Measurement and Evaluation: A Comprehensive Guide (1975). He has also served as editor of the Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation. Barker has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the American Educational Research Association's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the American Educational Research Association.

1976

Los Angeles Times syndicated columnist Nick Thimmesch wrote in 1976 that Barker had set up smoking areas on school grounds rather than using up school resources enforcing anti-smoking laws. Barker was also involved in controversies involving his support for the student council selection of topic "Black America" for a week of educational programs, sex education, which he favored, suspending football players for drinking and the firing of a teacher over inappropriate items posted in a classroom. Barker retired as principal of West High School in 1979 to manage his apartment business. In 2011 Barker donated $270,000, the sum of salary payments he received as principal from 1968 to 1979, to West High School for the construction of a soccer field, now named Ed Barker Field.

Barker was principal of high schools in Coon Rapids, Chariton, and Boone, Iowa, before becoming the first principal of Iowa City West High School in 1968. He received national press coverage due to his innovative disciplinary methods during the 1970s. Time magazine wrote in 1976:
