Eggert Gíslason Þorsteinsson is a former Icelandic politician who served as the Prime Minister of Iceland from 1988 to 1991. He was born on 6 July 1925 in Reykjavík, Iceland. He is the son of Gíslason Þorsteinsson and Sigríður Gísladóttir. He attended the University of Iceland and graduated with a degree in law in 1950. He then went on to pursue a career in politics and was elected to the Althing, the Icelandic Parliament, in 1959. He served as Minister of Justice from 1971 to 1974 and as Minister of Finance from 1974 to 1978. In 1988, he was elected Prime Minister of Iceland and served until 1991. During his tenure, he was credited with helping to stabilize the Icelandic economy and introducing a number of reforms. He also served as the President of the Nordic Council from 1989 to 1990. After leaving office, he returned to his law practice and served as a member of the Icelandic Constitutional Council from 1998 to 2002.
