Egon Bahr was a German politician and writer who served as a minister in the government of West Germany from 1963 to 1990. He was a key figure in the development of the Ostpolitik, a policy of détente with the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc countries. Bahr was born in Treffurt, Thuringia, Germany, on 18 March 1922. He studied law and economics at the University of Leipzig and the University of Berlin. After World War II, he joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and was elected to the Bundestag in 1949. In 1963, Bahr was appointed Minister for Special Affairs in the government of Chancellor Ludwig Erhard. He was responsible for the development of the Ostpolitik, a policy of détente with the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc countries. He was also a key figure in the negotiations that led to the signing of the Basic Treaty between West Germany and East Germany in 1972. Bahr served as Minister for Special Affairs until 1982, when he was appointed Minister of Disarmament and Security Policy. He held this position until 1990, when he retired from politics. Bahr was awarded the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1983 and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1990. He died on 26 August 2015, at the age of 93.
