Eitan Cabel is an Israeli politician and former Minister of Communications. He was born to a family of Holocaust survivors and grew up in Rosh Haayin. He served in the Israel Defense Forces and attained the rank of Major. Cabel began his political career in the Labor Party, and was elected to the Knesset in 1992. He served as Minister of Communications from 1999 to 2001, and was re-elected in 2003. He was appointed Minister of Science, Culture and Sport in 2006, and held the post until 2009. Cabel is married to Yael, and they have three children. He is an avid sports fan, and enjoys playing tennis and basketball. He is also a passionate supporter of the Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team. Cabel retained his seat in the 2009 elections, having been placed seventh on the party's list. In that tenure, he initiated a law that put a limit on call center waiting.

2007

In 2007 he resigned his position as Minister without Portfolio, and told Ehud Olmert to resign as well. He said "I can no longer sit in a government headed by Ehud Olmert." He resigned after the Winograd Commission released a report that blamed Olmert and other members of the Israeli government as being responsible for the failures of the Second Lebanon War.

He was first elected to the Knesset in 1996. In the past he has been the chairman of the Subcommittee for the Stock Market, and the Economic Affairs Committee. Currently he is a member of the House Committee, and the Foreign Affairs & Defense Committee. He is the chairman of the Lobby for the Promotion of Culture and Art in Israel. He is also a member of the Lobby for Reserve Soldiers, and Social-Environmental Lobby.
