He has also written and directed several television series, including Il commissario Montalbano (1999-present). Bartolini was born in Conegliano, Veneto, Italy on April 20, 1922. He studied at the University of Padua, where he earned a degree in philosophy. After graduating, he began working as a journalist and writer. In the 1950s, Bartolini began writing and directing plays and films. His first film, La vita è bella, was released in 1997 and was a critical and commercial success. He followed this up with the critically acclaimed Il postino in 1994 and La grande bellezza in 2013. Bartolini has won numerous awards for his work, including the David di Donatello Award for Best Director for La vita è bella, the Nastro d'Argento Award for Best Director for Il postino, and the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film for La grande bellezza.
