Elizabeth Spires is an American poet and university professor. She was born on May 28, 1952 in Lancaster, Ohio. She is the author of several collections of poetry, including Worldling (2005), The Wave-Maker (1998), and Swan's Island (1992). She has also written several children's books, including The Mouse of Amherst (1996) and A Book of Sleep (2009). Spires attended the University of Michigan, where she earned her B.A. in 1974 and her M.F.A. in 1976. She then went on to teach at Goucher College, where she was the director of the creative writing program from 1988 to 2006. She is currently a professor of English at Johns Hopkins University. Spires has received numerous awards and honors for her work, including the Poetry Society of America's Alice Fay di Castagnola Award, the Poetry Society of America's Norma Farber First Book Award, and the Poetry Society of America's Robert Frost Fellowship.
