Ellen Auerbach was a pioneering German photographer and filmmaker. She was a member of the influential Bauhaus school of art and design, and a co-founder of the renowned photography agency, Ringl + Pit. Auerbach was born in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 1906. She studied at the Bauhaus school in Dessau from 1927 to 1929, where she was the only female student in the photography workshop. She was also the only female member of the influential Bauhaus photography group, which included Walter Peterhans, László Moholy-Nagy, and Umbo. In 1929, Auerbach and her husband, Grete Stern, founded the photography agency Ringl + Pit. The agency specialized in advertising and fashion photography, and was highly successful. Auerbach and Stern also collaborated on a series of photomontages, which were exhibited in Berlin in 1932. In 1933, Auerbach and Stern fled Nazi Germany and settled in London. Auerbach continued to work as a photographer and filmmaker, and in 1936 she was commissioned to make a documentary film about the coronation of King George VI. In the 1940s, Auerbach and Stern moved to New York, where they continued to work as photographers and filmmakers. Auerbach also taught photography at the New School for Social Research and the International Center of Photography. Auerbach's work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Bauhaus Archive in Berlin. She died in 2004, at the age of 97.
