Ellie Greenwich was an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. She was one of the most successful female songwriters of the 1960s, writing or co-writing such hits as "Be My Baby," "Chapel of Love," "Leader of the Pack," and "River Deep – Mountain High." She was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1991. Greenwich was born in Brooklyn, New York, on October 23, 1940. She began her career as a singer, performing in local clubs and on the radio. She soon began writing songs, and in 1961, she had her first hit with "Goodbye, Johnny," which was recorded by The Crystals. Greenwich went on to write or co-write many of the biggest hits of the 1960s, including "Be My Baby," "Chapel of Love," "Da Doo Ron Ron," "Leader of the Pack," and "River Deep – Mountain High." She also wrote songs for films, including "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" for the 1964 film What a Way to Go. In addition to her songwriting, Greenwich was also a successful record producer. She produced albums for artists such as The Ronettes, The Crystals, and Darlene Love. Greenwich was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1991. She died on August 26, 2009, at the age of 68.
