He is best known for his roles in the films The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974), The Wiz (1978), and The Cotton Club (1984). Alexander was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 29, 1926. He attended the High School of Performing Arts in New York City and later studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Alexander began his career in the 1950s, appearing in small roles in films such as The Wild One (1953) and The Man with the Golden Arm (1955). He went on to appear in numerous television shows, including The Defenders, The Fugitive, and The Mod Squad. In 1974, Alexander starred in the classic crime thriller The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, playing the role of the subway dispatcher. He also appeared in the 1978 musical The Wiz, and the 1984 drama The Cotton Club. Alexander has continued to work in film and television throughout his career, appearing in films such as The Cotton Club Encore (2020) and television shows such as Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
