Elsa Beskow was a Swedish author and illustrator of children's books. She wrote and illustrated more than 30 books, many of which have been translated into English. Her books are known for their charming illustrations and stories about nature, animals, and the lives of children. She was born in Stockholm, Sweden, on 11 February 1874. Beskow studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Stockholm and began her career as an illustrator in the early 1900s. She wrote her first book, Peter in Blueberry Land, in 1906. It was an instant success and was followed by many other books, including Pelle's New Suit, The Land of Long Ago, and The Sun Egg. Beskow's books have been translated into many languages and have been adapted into films, plays, and television programs. She was awarded the Nils Holgersson Plaque in 1954 for her contribution to children's literature. She died in Stockholm on 18 June 1953.
